Travelers hoping to use Alaska Airlines without checking bags may soon find that a little tougher. The airline recently reduced the size of allowable carry-on bags to less than 22 inches long, 14 inches wide by 9 inches deep, beginning June 2018.

The change hopes to help the airline “better align with our codeshare partners and other major U.S. carriers, so you can more easily transfer among airlines without running into a snag with your bag,” according to a blog post.

Alaska currently allows bags carried on up to 24 inches long, 17 inches wide by 10 inches deep. The policy aligns Alaska’s rules with those of competitors like United Airlines and American Airlines. Southwest, on the other hand, allows passengers to bring bags up to 24 inches by 16 inches by 10 inches on board.

“Our current carry-on bag size is larger than most other international and domestic airlines allow,” according to the Alaska Airlines website. “We’re changing our bag size allowance to make sure that your carry-on bag will be accepted aboard all the flights within your itinerary. This will help you avoid carry-on bag size conflicts and make connections with other airlines easier during your future trips. Best of all, we’ll be able to fit more carry-on bags into the overhead bins.”
