Artwork doesn’t necessarily come to mind when we think about airports, but more and more facilities add art and sculptures to spruce up their space.

A stunning and notable sculpture dominates the scene outside Denver International Airport. While driving in and out, you can’t miss the 32-foot-tall Blue Mustang with its glowing red eyes and veins throughout the body. It isn’t the only prominent piece of art at DEN. The Children of the World Dream of Peace mural located in the baggage claim area catches the eye of many travelers. The mural by Leo Tanguma shows the message of the sadness of war on one hand and, on the other, children from around the world celebrating world peace.
The most notable piece of art at Frankfurt Airport in Germany is Destinations, a photographic installation along both sides of the 885-foot-long passenger tunnel located in Terminal 1. The work, created by the German artist Martin Liebscher, assembles panoramic images from more than 40 destinations around the world.
Salt Lake City Airport just got a major upgrade, and with it came multiple eye-catching sculptures. One that serves as the focal point of the new terminal is The Falls, a three-story-tall sculpture by Gordon Huether which uses the natural light provided by the curtain wall to create intriguing light effects in its vicinity. The sculpture features colorful, light-sensitive dichroic glass fins partnered with light-reflecting glass rods to create ever-changing colors and patterns on adjacent surfaces.
Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar, doesn’t hold back when it comes to art; the airport’s artwork, curated by Qatar museums, leans toward large and cutting-edge pieces. In the South Node, after departures, security and passport control, passengers encounter the jumbo-sized Lamp Bear sculpture by Urs Fischer. From the size to the bright yellow color, it is hard to miss. In another section of DOH, another larger-than-life sculpture functions as a place for children to play. Tom Otterness’ metal The Playground looks like a person lying on the ground; but as you get closer, you’ll notice it’s actually a playground with the person’s arm as a slide. Not only does this sculpture look cool, it also provides entertainment for the kids.
