A new study shows overall customer satisfaction with airport car rental companies increased despite growing congestion and logistical challenges due to airport construction.
The J.D. Power 2017 North American Rental Car Satisfaction Study was released last month, showing the main reason behind the rise in satisfaction was the sharp decline in rental rates.
Overall satisfaction rose by 22 points to 826 on a 1,000-point scale in 2017, as rental car prices dropped an average of $11 per day over the last year. At the same time, the average wait time for a rental car at the airport increased two minutes.
The study found 20 percent of customers who experienced a problem reported the pick-up process, and 17 percent said it was with the return process.
“Rental car satisfaction is improving, but it’s not really the type of satisfaction increase rental car companies want to see,” said Michael Taylor, travel practice lead, J.D. Power. “Lower prices are having a positive effect on perceived value for renters, which is raising overall levels of satisfaction, but several other key quality measures — notably, wait times and problems with the pick-up and return processes — have not improved over the past four years. But cheaper daily rental rates overcome those negatives for most renters.”

Sep 30, 2026Review: Sushi by Scratch at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley
Husband-and-wife team Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee made their mark by reinventing the term “hidden gem” through their surprising and intentional collection of destination restaurants. While they launched the original Scratch Kitchen in 2013, an expired lease prompted them to relocate to an unassuming strip mall in suburban Encino in 2015 and rename it Scratch Bar & Kitchen. Even at a time when the San Fernando Valley was not known for innovative 5-star dining, the Lees’ concepts gathered such a strong buzz that discerning diners cheerfully followed them “over the hill.”
