In the past, it wasn’t a completely uncommon occurrence to be bumped from a flight due to overbooking, or asked to volunteer to give up your seat in exchange for a flight credit or incentive. This practice has become less commonplace as airlines strive to avoid overbooking flights, according to a U.S. Department of Transportation report.

In an attempt to re-earn passengers’ trust after a rocky public relations period during the past few years, United Airlines is one airline committed to booking an appropriate number of seats on flights. Per the report, United decreased the number of passengers denied boarding in 2018 by almost 97 percent, compared with 2017 numbers.

United has reduced overbookings, particularly on flights that cover shorter distances and typically see fewer volunteers willing to give up seats in the case of overbooking. United also amended its overbooking policy, now offering customers compensation of up to $10,000 if they are denied boarding.

Elsewhere in air travel, other airlines saw considerable decreases in the number of denied boarding within the past year: JetBlue saw a decrease of 98 percent, Delta of 97 percent, American of 77 percent and Southwest of 70 percent.
