Travelers who riskily wait until the last minute to buy airline tickets and prefer spontaneous getaways over pre-planned vacations may soon be able to turn to a mobile app, helping them search for last-minute flight fares.

The Air Ticket Arena app lets users search for flights by destination and travel dates, and then have the option to bid on available seats with select airlines. Travelers choose from a list of participating airlines with seats available on select dates. Once these data are entered, users must enter the maximum amount (in euros) they would be willing to pay for a ticket. If seats are still available within the bidder’s price range (or below it) 24–48 hours before the flight is scheduled to depart, the designated airline will book the ticket and issue an e-ticket to the “winners.”

Air Ticket Arena solves a problem both for airlines with unsold seats and, therefore, missed opportunities for revenue, as well as for travelers keen to book last-minute city breaks. Since its rollout in early February, the app is still in the process of connecting with select airlines in the Middle East, Asia and Europe, but is currently in talks with 50 airlines.
