Oakland International Airport opened its new international arrivals terminal after a $45 million renovation.

The 130,000-square-foot terminal was expanded to handle about 600 passengers per hour — before the renovation it could only handle a single wide-body plane with no more than 300 people. The renovations included more visitor processing and passport control stations, and two new baggage carousels.

Oakland Airport is California’s fourth-busiest airport, seeing around 13 million passengers each year. International traffic increased 134 percent in the past year, with newcomers like Norwegian Air and British Airways adding 13 flights to international destinations.

“This represents important growth at the airport — international growth,” said Joan Story, president, Port of Oakland’s Board of Commissioners. “People are now beginning to understand there is an alternative to [San Francisco International Airport] when they travel internationally.”
