You may already know it as the coastal California town where actor/director Clint Eastwood once reigned as mayor, but Carmel-by-the-Sea has plenty of other draws that have nothing to do with politics. This year marks the city’s Centennial celebration, themed as A Century of Memories. Among the many planned events will be the Concours on the Avenue (Aug. 16) preceding the Concours d’Elegance 2016 (Aug. 18) event in neighboring Pebble Beach. For a day, the city’s legendary Ocean Avenue becomes a showroom of dazzling collector cars from the United States and abroad. Juried classes include Luxury Cars, Muscle Cars, Hot Rods and Sporting Cars. This year, highlights will include Micro Cars, judged on authenticity, originality and provenance. Other highlights this year include a performance by the Monterey Symphony Concert with violinist Anne Akiko Meyers (Sunset Center, May 21–22), the 39th Young Musicians Competition for Pianists (Sunset Center, June 4), The Borrowers — The Musical (Forest Theatre, preview on June 23), House & Garden Tour of outstanding historic homes presented by the Carmel Heritage Society (June 25), Bach Festival (various locations, July 16–30), a live performance of Abalone by Bill Broader (Cherry Center, Aug. 5–7), Robinson Jeffers Tor House Fall Festival (Tor House, Sept. 30–Oct. 2), PacRep’s Carmel Shakespeare Festival Twelfth Night (Outdoor Forest Theatre, Oct. 1,2, 6–9, 13–16) and King Lear (Oct. 20–30, Circle Theatre), Carmel International Film Festival (Oct. 19–22, Sunset Center), Monterey Symphony Concerts presents Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream (Nov. 19–20, Sunset Center), and a tree lighting ceremony to kick off holiday events at Ocean Avenue and Devendorf Park (Dec. 2).
