Follow The Flamenco Route Through Spain

Nov 12, 2015
Daily

Embark upon an enchanting musical adventure in Spain’s breathtaking Andalusia region by following a route dedicated to legendary flamenco singer Cayetano Muriel, also known as el Niño de Cabra. Set off from Cordoba along a path that takes in four villages including Muriel’s hometown of Cabra. Other stops include Bujalance, Lucena and Puente Genil, forever linked to Muriel by history.

Cordoba is also home to the clock of Las Tendillas, which heralds each new hour with chimes that form a typical seguiriyas composed by famed flamenco guitarist Juan Serrano. Learn the finer points of the fandangos abandolaos, soleá and alegrías styles while touring sites connected to flamenco’s very roots including the Great Mosque of Cordoba, Cordoba’s Jewish Quarter, the Roman Bridge and Gate, the Alcazar fortress of the Christian monarchs, Calleja de las Flores Alley and the Calahorra Tower. Along the way, take in live performances at traditional flamenco clubs called tablaos. Time your visit for July, and enjoy the International Guitar Festival.

The Flight Less Taken: Unsung Carriers Whisk You Away to Far-Flung Destinations

The miracle of flight feels slightly less miraculous these days. Endless delays, cramped seating and shortchanged amenities feel par for the course, and one can easily forget the wondrous fact that you’re hurtling above planet Earth, soaring above the clouds and across the skies to your destination of choice. In the olden days, you were limited to the fallibility of your outrigger canoe or horse-drawn carriage. It’s not hyperbolic to invoke the invention of the wheel when reminding oneself to stay calm and carry on in coach.

Review: Bodysgallen Hall

The National Trust owns more than 500 historic buildings across the United Kingdom, each offering a vivid sense of its particular era. In common with many visitors, I often find myself wondering what it would be like to actually live in such a place. Imagine sitting, for instance, in one of those ancient oak-paneled drawing rooms at night, with the fire roaring and the wind rattling the ancient mullioned windows. I didn’t have to imagine it. Here I was, immersed in history in 17th-century Bodysgallen Hall in North Wales.

The Art of Balance in Seoul: Beyond the Boardroom

The value of a destination is no longer defined solely by infrastructure, efficiency or scale. Increasingly, it is measured by a city’s ability to balance productivity with well-being — creating opportunities for focus, restoration and more meaningful connections.

How Safe Are Theme Park Rollercoasters? Should We Be More Wary?

No matter your age, we’ve all ventured to an amusement park at one point or another. Whether taking a trip solely to visit a theme park and ride rollercoasters or tacking on an extra day of a trip to enjoy some thrills at a nearby park, it’s nearly impossible to not enter an amusement park. But even the most adrenaline-seeking travelers are starting to pause after the Oct. 12 incident in which 42-year-old Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem fell to his death while riding Goliath rollercoaster at Six Flags Over Georgia, a theme park outside of Atlanta. After the tragedy, Six Flags, the country’s largest theme park operator, closed 10 rides across seven states.
