Undoubtedly the most well-known and best-loved ocean liner plying the seven seas, the Queen Mary II is sailing toward a marvelous new refit. Leading maritime designers SMC — a London-based firm whose clients include luxury yachts, Viking Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Thomson Cruises — will spearhead the multi-million dollar project, expected to fill a 25-day period between May 27 and June 21, 2016.
The retrofit will include new signature color schemes, new carpets and furniture, and an update on the liner’s stunning art deco lines. Additional decorative fixtures and fittings will also be installed, adding to the signature graceful style, sophisticated glamour and legendary White Star Service. The changes, which incorporate passenger input, are not limited to interior design: the QMII will also gain 15 new single cabins and 30 additional Britannia Club cabins, while four-legged passengers will benefit from an expansion to the kennel area.

Oct 23, 2026The Flight Less Taken: Unsung Carriers Whisk You Away to Far-Flung Destinations
The miracle of flight feels slightly less miraculous these days. Endless delays, cramped seating and shortchanged amenities feel par for the course, and one can easily forget the wondrous fact that you’re hurtling above planet Earth, soaring above the clouds and across the skies to your destination of choice. In the olden days, you were limited to the fallibility of your outrigger canoe or horse-drawn carriage. It’s not hyperbolic to invoke the invention of the wheel when reminding oneself to stay calm and carry on in coach.

Oct 21, 2026Review: Bodysgallen Hall
The National Trust owns more than 500 historic buildings across the United Kingdom, each offering a vivid sense of its particular era. In common with many visitors, I often find myself wondering what it would be like to actually live in such a place. Imagine sitting, for instance, in one of those ancient oak-paneled drawing rooms at night, with the fire roaring and the wind rattling the ancient mullioned windows. I didn’t have to imagine it. Here I was, immersed in history in 17th-century Bodysgallen Hall in North Wales.

Oct 21, 2026How Safe Are Theme Park Rollercoasters? Should We Be More Wary?
No matter your age, we’ve all ventured to an amusement park at one point or another. Whether taking a trip solely to visit a theme park and ride rollercoasters or tacking on an extra day of a trip to enjoy some thrills at a nearby park, it’s nearly impossible to not enter an amusement park. But even the most adrenaline-seeking travelers are starting to pause after the Oct. 12 incident in which 42-year-old Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem fell to his death while riding Goliath rollercoaster at Six Flags Over Georgia, a theme park outside of Atlanta. After the tragedy, Six Flags, the country’s largest theme park operator, closed 10 rides across seven states.
