Hotel Meets Art At Iconic Melbourne Landmark

Jun 29, 2013
Daily / Exclusive

Celebrating its 130th anniversary, The Hotel Windsor — Melbourne’s grand dame of hotels — is set to become the canvas for Luminescence, an exhibition of works by artists from the Victorian College of Arts at the University of Melbourne. From July 26–Sept. 5, works on display visually explore the many interpretations of “luminosity,” while making creative use of the historic hotel’s interior spaces including ceilings, fireplaces, stairways, windows and corridors. Outside, a team of Australia’s most renowned lighting designers will illuminate the hotel’s facade for a spectacular display. The exhibition includes the announcement of The Windsor Art Award, an AUD 10,000 scholarship presented to the winning artist.

Review: Sushi by Scratch at Grand Hyatt Deer Valley

Husband-and-wife team Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee made their mark by reinventing the term “hidden gem” through their surprising and intentional collection of destination restaurants. While they launched the original Scratch Kitchen in 2013, an expired lease prompted them to relocate to an unassuming strip mall in suburban Encino in 2015 and rename it Scratch Bar & Kitchen. Even at a time when the San Fernando Valley was not known for innovative 5-star dining, the Lees’ concepts gathered such a strong buzz that discerning diners cheerfully followed them “over the hill.”
