Speculation Continues to Mount Following London’s Heathrow Airport Shutdown

On March 21, Heathrow Airport, Europe’s busiest, shut down after a nearby substation caught fire, damaging its power supply and forcing the airport to close for 18 hours. The fire resulted in more than 200,000 passengers stranded and airlines losing millions of dollars.

Questions quickly arose surrounding the nature of the fire. British prime minister Sir Keir Starmer said he was “deeply concerned” over the closure, and many travelers and airlines began to question how one of the world’s busiest airports didn’t have enough power to operate after one of its substations caught fire. Many also considered more sinister, intentional causes of the fire.

In fact, Russia taunted the United Kingdom over the fire, with media speculating the fire was sabotage by the Kremlin. People on social media also posed the theory of hybrid warfare. This idea isn’t as farfetched as one might think: Between 2023 and 2024 alone, Russian sabotage attacks nearly tripled, according to NBC News. That said, Russia eventually denied any part in the fire, as well as a larger sabotage campaign across Europe.

And, on March 25, British police said the fire was no longer being treated as a potentially criminal matter. Initial findings will be released within the next six weeks.

The fire raised the question of how such a busy airport was unable to stay powered when just one of its substations went out. According to John Pettigrew, CEO, National Grid (which oversees the United Kingdom’s electricity network), there were two other substations that remained operational and capable of keeping Heathrow powered.

The event mirrors other previous incidents at airports in which a glitch or error resulted in many flights grounded and thousands of travelers stuck. In July 2024, a historic outage from a software update impacted U.S. airlines for days, with Delta Air Lines particularly struggling to bounce back. On the actual day of the outage, Delta had to cancel more than 1,200 flights, and thousands more were canceled that same weekend.

In September 2023, United Airlines grounded flights across the country following a technology issue. And the notorious FAA system outage in January 2023 resulted in one of the worst shutdowns in years for U.S. airlines and airports, seeing thousands of flights canceled.

With airlines and airports heavily relying on technology and electricity, it paves the way for more potential problems in the future like what happened at Heathrow.

Were you impacted by the Heathrow outage? Have you been affected by any of the recent U.S. airline/airport outages in the past two years? What was your experience like? Email us at letters@globaltravelerusa.com. Please include your full name and location.
