If you’re planning a trip to Vienna, you may want to get out your calendar and scan your closet for the perfect outfit. For LGBT travelers, the capital city of Austria provides lots of event excitement year-round. For the best insider recommendations, we consulted with Thomas Pinegger and Lukas Fuerst, who both serve as concierges at the Park Hyatt Vienna, one of the city’s top international luxury hotels.
Special events in Vienna for the LGBT community include the annual Life Ball, a festive gathering in front of the town hall which Pinegger and Fuerst describe as “the most unconventional AIDS charity event.” The next Life Ball takes place in May 2017. Also popular is the Rainbow Parade, part of the city’s LGBT pride festivities every June.
Pinegger and Fuerst also recommend an array of other events for LGBT travelers: Every January, the Rainbow Ball attracts well-dressed revelers, while in February the Creative Ball and Rose Ball provide additional reasons to dress up for a night out. Usually scheduled in April are queer:beat, a giant dance party, and Diversity Ball, a fantastical fundraising event. Every May, the Boylesque Festival Vienna brings a modern twist to burlesque.
Of course, you don’t have to visit during an event to enjoy Vienna. Year-round, many clubs, cafés and bars cater to LGBT clientele — Pinegger and Fuerst recommend Why Not, Café Savoy and Felixx Bar.
Park Hyatt’s location is a big selling point for LGBT travelers, according to Pinegger. “Easy access to many bars, clubs and cafés makes the hotel the most preferred hotel,” he said. “Furthermore, young and open-minded staff in the hotel, as well as insider tips on where to go and what to see, make the stay an enriching experience for uncommon and sophisticated LGBT travelers.” In addition, he noted, “The hotel is located in the heart of the most exclusive shopping district in Vienna, just steps away from the celebrated fashion houses and boutiques of Kohlmarkt.” So you might just be able to find the perfect outfit for that next big Vienna event.
