Little White WiFi Lies

Out of Office

According to Allianz Global Assistance’s 2019 Vacation Confidence Index, nearly half (49 percent) of working Americans avoid checking on the office and work while on vacation.

The report also determined 65 percent of workers feel work obligations affect personal time. These workers tend to feel pressure to check in with work, but won’t always follow through.

According to the Index, one way workers avoid checking in on work, even when they feel the need, is to blame spotty WiFi.

This excuse is generally used mostly by millennials, with 59 blaming WiFi issues for not checking in at the office while on vacation, followed by Gen X’ers at 49 percent copping to using white lies. Boomers come in at 32 percent, claiming they blame faulty WiFi for neglecting work on vacation.

The study also determined both men and women are equally honest, with a near 50–50 split, but, as it turns out, money talks. Those earning more than $50,000 annual income, about 53 percent, use the excuse to not work on vacation, while those earning less than $50,000 a year are less likely to lie, at 39 percent.

Nearly a quarter of all working Americans (24 percent) make a point to travel somewhere on vacation with spotty cell reception, or without WiFi access as to not be tempted to work while out of office.

Millennials come in high (74 percent) with checking email while away, 58 percent for Gen X’ers and 63 percent for Boomers — most agreeing it makes catching up with work more manageable after vacation.
