The European Union Aviation Safety Agency announced it could release the Boeing 737 MAX from grounding during quarter one in 2020.
EASA officials said they could approve the MAX to fly again by January, but authorities and airlines need time to make plans, so the planes may not actually resume commercial flights for another one–two months after approval.
“If there are training requirements (and) coordination to be done with the EU member states to make sure everyone does the same thing at the same time, this will take a bit of time,” said Patrick Ky, executive director, EASA. “That’s why I’m saying the first quarter of 2020.”
Boeing hopes to return the plane to service by the end of 2019 in the United States, once approved by the Federal Aviation Administration and other government representatives. The FAA is vetting Boeing’s software upgrades, designed to avoid the issues that led to two plane crashes that killed 346 people.
The EASA is also performing its own checks before it will recertify the planes.
“There has been a lot of work done on the design of the software,” Ky continued. “We think there is still some work to be done.”
