The Siwa Oasis in Egypt’s Western Desert is the address for Adrere Amellal,one of the world’s most distinctive eco-resorts. Blending seamlessly into the surrounding landscape of ochre-colored dunes that border the oasis, 40 unique rooms were hand built using centuries-old Siwan building techniques. No light switches to detract from the dramatic walls — instead, lighting comes from beeswax candles and the star-filled night sky. Outside, open-air terraces provide views of salt lakes and date groves, perfect for inducing a sense of tranquility.

Poolside, there are deep loungers and tables carved from desert rock. Delicious meals are mostly organic, and consist of locally sourced foods. Each night, dinner is served in a different spot within the resort, including the interior of a grotto shimmering with salt crystals and the light of clustered candles.
