The Federal Aviation Administration is under fire for its NextGen flight path modernization program, which sends unwelcome noise over some neighborhoods.
The new flight paths, implemented in 2014, are more precise and save time and fuel while reducing emissions and increasing the number of planes operable at any given airport at a time. But the changes mean some people hear more noise as a result of the flights passing over their homes more frequently at low altitudes.
Phoenix filed a lawsuit against the FAA for the noise. Some of the city’s historic neighborhoods drew thousands of complaints in 2015. Residents in other places, including California, New York, North Carolina, Maryland and Washington, D.C. expressed similar frustrations. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan ordered the state’s attorney general to sue the FAA too.
At least one FAA expert says there may not be a solution.
“There is an intrinsic issue of concentrating noise in particular places that comes with precision-based navigation that is inescapable,” said David Grizzle, former chief operating officer, FAA.
