Hotwire.com’s third annual American Travel Behavior Survey, conducted in October among more than 2,000 U.S. adults, reveals American adults will spend a total of $72 billion on obligatory holiday season travel — $14 billion on Thanksgiving travel and $58 billion on Christmas travel.

Hotwire also released a State of Holiday Travel Report, offering insights on current trends for season and tips for getting the best prices on travel bookings. According to the surveys, Chicago is a top hotel deal destination for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and beach locales, such as Cancun and Ft. Lauderdale, offer airfare discounts.

For Thanksgiving travel, compared to 2012, hotel prices are up 3 percent, airfares for the top 20 markets are up 8 percent and car prices are 7 percent higher. Similarly for this Christmas season as compared to last, hotel prices are up 4 percent, air prices, up 6 percent and car prices are 4 percent higher.
