American Airlines Makes Strides in Sustainability

American Airlines joined the ranks of other environmentally conscious travel companies when it announced last week the immediate banning of plastic straws and stirring sticks in its lounges. The transition away from plastic straws and stir sticks will come to flights in November of this year.

Lounges will now utilize wood sticks and eco-friendly straws. The onboard changes will pivot from plastic stir sticks to bamboo sticks. According to American Airlines, these changes will save more than 71,000 pounds of plastic every year.

In addition to the straws and stir sticks, the airline is set to move away from plastic flatware in lounges as well.

American Airlines has been at the forefront of sustainability since, in 1989, flight attendants began the airline’s onboard recycling program. In 2015, the airline moved away from plastic foam cups.

“We’re cognizant of our impact on the environment and we remain committed to doing our part to sustain the planet for future generations of travelers,” said Jill Surdek, vice president, flight service, American Airlines.

American Airlines is not the only travel company to give in to environmental pressure. In May, Alaska Airlines banned plastic straws. Hyatt announced, after Sept. 1, plastic straws and drink stirrers will only be available by special request. In June, Royal Caribbean announced its goal to stop providing plastic straws by the end of 2018.
