Nickel-and-diming airlines is nothing new as more and more companies continue to lower airfare, but tack on fees, ensuring minimal losses in profits. As fee structures seem to change daily, it can be difficult keeping track when flying with any given U.S. airline — a recent survey of frequent travelers reveals which domestic airlines collect the most in baggage fees, and which collect the most per passenger.

The survey, conducted by FinanceBuzz, revealed American Airlines is the worst U.S. airline in terms of bag fees, followed by low-cost Spirit Airlines and United Airlines. FinanceBuzz also released data in parallel with the survey results that showed American does indeed charge and collect the most money for baggage fees.

During the first half of 2019, American collected $660 million in baggage fees, while United collected $513 million and Delta brought in $490 million. Spirit brought in $370 million, but ranked second-highest in the largest amount collected per passenger.

Even at a time when the San Fernando Valley was not known for innovative 5-star dining, the Lees’ concepts gathered such a strong buzz that discerning diners cheerfully followed them “over the hill.”
