This winter, Southern California is the place to be for new exhibitions. Through Feb. 20, 2017, Go West! Art of the American Frontier is on view at the Palm Springs Art Museum, featuring 90 works by painters and sculptors George Catlin, Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Remington, Charles Russell and N.C. Wyeth. Works explore the American West during the 100-year period from 1830 to 1930, and the exhibition includes a number of objects created by members of Sioux, Cheyenne and other Native American peoples. Organized by the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyo., the display illuminates the development of popular views of the American West.

At The Architecture and Design Center through Feb. 27, 2017, MetaModern showcases Modernist design in all its contemporary glory, with works in a range of media by Terence Gower, Edgar Orlaineta, James Welling, Conrad Bakker, Clarissa Tossin and Elmgreen & Dragset. At Palm Springs Art Museum in Palm Desert, glass is the topic of Glass for the New Millennium: Masterworks from the Kaplan-Ostergaard Collection. Works from the private collection of David Kaplan and Glenn Ostergaard are on view through March 7, 2017. Meanwhile, The Galen Gallery presents the first major museum exhibition by artist Pat Lasch. Through March 25, 2017, Journeys of the Heart displays a 40-year retrospective of the artist’s stitched canvas panels, bronze sculptures and dresses created from hand-painted lace.
