Who needs summer? This year, for the first time, three of Newport, Rhode Island’s most iconic seaside mansions — The Breakers, The Elms and Marble House — are open daily throughout the winter months. Guided tours are available at each location, with self-guided audio tours offered during especially busy periods. Two more mansions — Chateau-sur-Mer and Kingscote — will open March 19. On May 21, the remainder of the majestic homes will unlock their doors to visitors.

The Preservation Society of Newport County, a non-profit organization that oversees the preservation and interpretation of this unique area’s architecture, landscapes and decorative arts, maintains all 11 homes and their furnishings. Seven of Newport’s mansions are designated as National Historic Landmarks. The Society’s website lists upcoming lectures, symposiums, children’s programs and special exhibitions. Annual events that attract an international audience include the Newport Flower Show in June and the Wine & Food Festival in September. Splendor at Sea, a special exhibition exploring the golden age of steam yachting in America, opens this May at Rosecliff.
