Being weighed at the doctor’s office is humiliating enough, but what if you were required to step on a scale at the airport before boarding a plane? Last November, Finnair initiated this practice with the goal to weigh 2,000 of its passengers over a series of a few weeks.

Finnair’s goal was to collect data on its passengers’ weights in order to estimate future fuel requirements and organize its budget for fuel costs. Other European airlines use the same practice but typically examine the data provided by the European Aviation Safety Agency, which periodically show correlations between an airplane’s weight, fuel usage and overall safety. Because the most recent results of this report are from 2009, Finnair decided to take the experiment into its own hands by manually weighing passengers and their luggage at check-in, and coming up with an approximate total weight of each flight.
