Whether you call it moonshine, cool water or white lightning, Sugarlands Distillery in Gatlinburg, Tenn. — makers of Heritage Tennessee Whiskey, small batch whisky and moonshine — has a blend for every palate, plus great tours that explore the mysteries of creating bespoke flavors such as Jim Tom Hendrick’s Unaged Rye, Silver Cloud Tennessee Sour Mash, Tickle’s Dynamite Cinnamon, Appalachian Apple Pie, Southern Sweet Tea, Electric Orange and Dark Chocolate Coffee Cream. There are complimentary daily tours, plus premium private tours with a chance to sample award-winning Sugarlands Shine. The Blended Sampling Tour ($15 per person) includes a 30-minute private tour of the still house to see how the ’shine is made, plus a mixology lesson with an expert TasteMaker who will demonstrate five ways to mix and blend moonshine into sophisticated cocktails.

The Distiller Workshop Tour ($40 per person) allows visitors to participate in a hands-on distilling session, plus the opportunity to fill their own jar of moonshine to take away. During the Distiller for the Day Workshop ($250 per person), participants will go deep, spending the day with head distiller Greg Eidam while creating a batch of Sugarlands Shine, from grinding corn and mixing mast to proofing the distillate. When you’re none, fill a jar with brew to take home. Or better yet, plan your visit to coincide with one of the live music events on the Sugarlands Spirit Stage. Have more time? Sign up for an expedition with Smoky Mountain Guides, and set off into the wilderness on the Moonshining in the Mountains motor tour, half-day hike, backcountry adventure or overnight camping trip.
