Feature

This past spring, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines launched international basic-economy flights between the United States and Europe. With much speculation surrounding what will and will not be included in terms of amenities and services, the airlines made it more clear on the websites so passengers will know what to expect from this new class of seating.

Passengers on American Airlines flights to Europe will be allowed one personal item and one carry-on bag, but still must pay for any checked bags. Travelers will receive an automatic seat assignment when they check in, but they can pay extra to choose their own seat. Tickets can be changed, one difference compared with domestic economy seats, but upgrades are not possible. These rules will carry over to partner airlines British Airways and Iberia.

Approximately half of Delta’s flights between the United States and Europe will offer basic economy seating, which will require a checked bag fee of $60 for the first bag and $100 for the second bag. Seat assignments will be available upon checking in (not before), and neither ticket changes nor seat upgrades will be permitted.
