People who are environmentally conscious are always looking for ways to reduce their footprint, and travel enthusiasts are no different. Aside from recycling when possible, here are some easy ways for travelers to reduce their carbon footprint.

The first thing travelers should do is book a direct flight. If a direct flight isn’t possible, picking a route with as few layovers as possible is the right choice. This not only reduces the footprint of the traveler, but results in a less stressful trip.

Travelers should carpool whenever possible. This is more relevant for trips involving large groups of people. Groups should share rides and cars when available.

Once at your destination faced with a myriad choices to make about how to spend the day, choosing to do something natural will reduce your footprint. Choices like hiking and snorkeling are better for the environment than going to amusement parks or go-kart tracks.

Travelers should also buy local whenever possible. Support the local economy and shun heavily processed and packaged items that not only hurt locals, but leave an impression on the environment.

Longer trips, while not often possible, are good for the environment. Using a lengthy flight to stay in one place for a short amount of time is the opposite of efficiency. In addition, reusing water bottles, walking instead of driving and using less electricity are all ways travelers can easily reduce their carbon footprint while traveling.
