In just a few months, the South African city of Cape Town may run out of water. It is a threat looming because of the current drought, considered the worst in a century. The dams dried up due to below-average rains, and even strict water restrictions have not replenished them.

The day water is estimated to run out is dubbed Day Zero, and will have a foreboding and disastrous impact on the city’s all-important tourism industry. Cape Town’s tourism is an integral source of income to its local economy. The city receives more than 3 million visitors per year, supporting hundreds and thousands of jobs and bringing in more than $3 billion in revenue.

Initiatives to save water were adopted by many of the tourism businesses in the city in order to keep guests’ water usage down. Many city hotels had bath plugs removed, timers added to showers, water-efficient shower heads installed, swimming pools closed and steam rooms shut down. At Hotel Verde, guests receive a discount for not using a glass or ice when ordering a drink. One of the biggest challenges is educating visitors about the dire situation, so they may be sympathetic to the cause.

Without water, Cape Town does its best to stay afloat.
