Waldorf Astoria New York is the midst of a restoration of one of its most anticipated spaces, the Grand Ballroom, has been revealed, and is now a designated New York City interior landmark. The space has seen several renovations over the course of its iconic history, but, with this new look, many elements will be returned to the original 1931 specifications, but with the technology of the 21^st century.

Skidmore, Owings & Merrill leads the Grand Ballroom’s restoration, and will realize visions the original architects, Schultze & Weaver, were unable to execute at the time. It is one of the largest ballrooms in New York City, accommodating more than 1,000 people in 15,000-plus square feet.

In a nod to the original 1931 design, a brilliant central ceiling medallion will be revealed for the first time in decades. Structural isolation is key in the restoration, ensuring events can proceed without disturbance to the rest of the building. The development team is working closely with the Landmarks Preservation Commission to ensure the heritage of the ballroom space is preserved.

Waldorf Astoria New York will officially open in early 2023, following delays as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Advanced bookings for Grand Ballroom events will open in the coming months.
