The most recent Vitals Index released a ranking of the best ski resorts in the United States, based primarily on available access to emergency care, but also considering snowfall, cost and number of runs.
The top three options were all located in Utah and included Snowbird, Park City and Alta. Rounding out the top five were California’s Squaw Valley and Heavenly Mountain. Near the bottom of the list were popular ski resorts as Vail, with other favorite options Jackson Hole and Aspen falling around the middle of the list.
According to Vitals, more than 53.6 million travelers visited a U.S. ski resort in 2015, making the industry a profitable one worth nearly $3 billion. They also, however, warn that around 600,000 of these visitors will experience some sort of skiing or snowboarding-related injury, most usually lower leg, wrist or collarbone fractures, as well as knee and ankle injuries.
