Richard Branson has been famously trying to launch space tourism with his Virgin Galactic company, but it hasn’t been smooth sailing so far. Last year, his SpaceShipTwo crashed during testing and killed a pilot.
But now Branson has a new toy — a spaceship called Virgin Spaceship (VSS) Unity. Virgin Galactic has spent more than three years building it at the Mojave Air & Space Port in California.
The ship will eventually carry tourists 50 miles above Earth’s surface — that is, of course, if it passes rigorous testing.
“Our beautiful new spaceship, VSS Unity, is the embodiment of that goal and also a great testament to what can be achieved when true teamwork, great skill and deep pride are combined with a common purpose,” Branson said in a Virgin Galactic press release.
Branson has more than 700 people waiting to fly with his company; they’ll be coughing up $250,000 per seat for the privilege.
