Virgin Atlantic showed off its new Upper Class suite, added to the company’s Airbus A350-1000 aircraft this summer.

The carrier will move away from its current herringbone Upper Class layout (where seats face into the cabin), to a new 1-2-1 configuration with seats facing outward, toward the windows. The new seats have a 44-inch pitch, with the seat converting into an 82-inch fully flat bed.

The carrier says, “All suites will transition seamlessly from an upright seat, straight to a bed,” so passengers don’t have to get up to flip the seat into a bed. The new 18.5-inch screen will allow passengers to control the IFE system through their personal devices, and “a deployable privacy screen.”

Passengers seated in Upper Class will also be able to access the new A350 space called The Loft, which has a 32-inch TV screen connectable with individual headsets via Bluetooth.

The airline is also updating its premium and economy seats with larger IFE screens, increased storage in premium, and new fabrics in economy. All passengers will have access to high-speed internet.

“The introduction of our A350 represents a true evolution of our customer experience. We believe flying should be exciting, whether it’s your first or 100th flight with us and that’s why we’ve elevated our offering to provide our customers with something totally unique,” said Mark Anderson, executive vice president customer, Virgin Atlantic. “The A350 forms a significant part of our fleet transformation strategy and by 2022, we’ll have our youngest, cleanest, greenest fleet in the sky as the aircraft transforms our customer experience, reduces our environmental impact and improves our route economics.”

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
