Virgin Atlantic and Airbus recently partnered to test Smart Catering, an AI-driven tool created to reduce cabin food waste on long-haul flights by 18–20 percent. Initial tests were carried out in 2025 and 2026 on Airbus A330 and A350 flights to New York and Orlando, using tablet cameras to scan tray waste and track untouched food for improved, data-driven loading.
While the tracking of meals and beverages happens in the normal work flow of cabin crew members, the Smart Catering solution outfits crew members with crew device information about real-time stock management and location, allergy and nutrition information, and more.
Smart Catering will come with a “ground cloud” through which all onboard data from crew devices can be analyzed, allowing airlines to use route-level insights to quantify precise passenger demand fulfillment.
