Viking continues to set the bar high with its recent announcement of a second hydrogen-powered cruise ship, Viking Astrea. What does this mean exactly? Capable of operating with zero emissions, the ship reduces environmental impact by eliminating any harmful pollutants filling the air during operation. This also allows guests potential access to the most environmentally sensitive areas during the cruise.
The company conducted a float-out ceremony, marking two milestones for Viking Astrea: moving its way into final stages of construction and its first-time touching water.
“The float out of the Viking Astrea represents another important milestone for Viking,” said Leah Talactac, president and CEO, Viking. “From the beginning, we have sought thoughtful ways to design more efficient ships, and the Viking Astrea is an important step forward in that ongoing effort.”
Set to sail the ocean blues in May 2027, the ship will spend its inaugural season hosting 998 guests and sailing itineraries in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe.
Viking Astrea’s (older) sister ship, Viking Libra, is the world’s first hydrogen-powered cruise ship capable of operating with zero emissions. Set to sail later this year, the ship also welcomes 998 guests to create personalized experiences with customized itineraries, tours and excursions.
