Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh’s watercolor The Garden of the Vicarage at Nuenen has come home. The acquisition by Het Noordbrabants Museum in Den Bosch, Holland, is significant for several reasons: Created between October and November of 1885, The Garden of the Vicarage at Nuenen is the last known watercolor produced by Van Gogh in Nuenen. The subject of the painting is now one of Brabant’s cultural heritage sites. The painting also represents the museum’s dedication to offer an overview of Van Gogh’s Brabant period, supported by the artist’s original works.

Van Gogh once lived with his family at the vicarage shown in the painting — the richly colored scene of trees and blue sky depicts the garden behind the vicarage, known to be one of the artist’s favorite places, and where he produced a number of works. Het Noordbrabants Museum is the only museum venue in southern Holland to exhibit Van Gogh’s original works, and the recently acquired watercolor is displayed in the Van Gogh pavilion. Don’t wait too long: Due to its extreme fragility, the painting will only be on public display until March 19.
