Are you making an early New Year’s resolution to take a digital detox in 2024? A private island in the South Pacific makes it easy to step away from those screens.

Wakaya Private Island Resort & Spa, a 32-person resort in Fiji set on 3,200 acres of a private island, will make you want to leave those chargers at home and switch all devices to the off position. Yes, the fact the resort is located on a private island should be your first clue you’ll be getting away from it all (including your laptop and never-ending dings from text messages). Picture isolated stretches of beaches, holing up in your waterfront accommodation and finding solitude wherever you go. Ah, now that’s better.

The travel involved to get to this remote tropical paradise literally takes you off the grid, requiring boarding a commercial plane (or several) and then a 10-person Cessna, followed by a bumpy ride down an unpaved dirt road through a tropical rainforest dotted with Banyan trees. Oh, and did we mention you cross the International Date Line to get there? So you can tell your coworkers no, you can’t make that Teams meeting because your calendars don’t align.

You’ll forget about all that lengthy travel, though, when you arrive at this peaceful solitude, where you may see members of the island nation’s only native deer population happily frolicking.

But first, check into one of seven, sprawling, 1,650-square-foot, freestanding. waterfront Fijian cottage suites (called bures). Outside, landscaping provides privacy; a secluded garden leads down to the beach; and a private, rear-facing lawn has front- and back-covered outdoor decks and hammocks. Inside, you’ll find cathedral ceilings, indigenous Yaka timber flooring, a large bedroom, and a bathroom suite with Jacuzzi bathtub and open-air lava rock shower.

If that’s not large or entertaining enough to make you want stay off TikTok, book an Ambassador’s Bure; Vale Levu (big house); or Sega Na Leqa, a private estate with a master wing, two bathrooms, state-of-the-art kitchen, private guest suite and private infinity spa. Opening in 2024 is Vale O, or “house in the clouds,” a 12,000-square-foot, three-bedroom villa.

Outdoor adventures, like scuba diving or snorkeling in the marine preserve right in front of your bure, will keep you from binging the last season of The Crown. You can also take a nature walk or a guided sunrise hike over Chieftain’s Leap, or try stand-up paddleboard, kayaking, jet skiing and Hobie cats.

And you won’t even consider using your Calm app or watching an ASMR video on YouTube to relax when you can bliss out instead in the resort’s spa, Breeze, where treatments use Pure Fiji products and local ingredients like leaves from the dilo plant, used for a body wrap.

Of course, you can use your phone to capture memories of your Fijian getaway. Just wait until you get home and back online to post them on the ‘Gram and make your friends jealous.

Bask in Nature’s Tranquility at The Spa at Four Seasons Tamarindo

When the two of us entered The Spa at Four Seasons Tamarindo, past the backlit boutique items and local artisan-painted wood carvings, the place wrapped us in a feeling of tranquility. Its stone walls, earth tones, woven wall hangings and furniture made of natural materials reminded us we are part of nature’s spectrum, the abundant windows showing native plants and trees outside.
