United Airlines is increasing its checked bag fees, following similar moves by JetBlue, Air Canada and Westjet. United increased the fees for a first checked bag from $25 to $30, and for the second from $35 to $40.
Passengers checking bags on cross-border flights to destinations in Canada have to pay $50.
“As we continue to make investments that make travel on United better, we are making adjustments to our checked bag fees in select markets — most of which have not been changed for the past eight years,” an airline spokesperson told Bloomberg News.
Airlines blame rising costs, like fuel, in their decisions to levy more and more fees on passengers. Industry experts expect rivals Delta Air Lines and American Airlines to soon follow suit. So far, Southwest is the only major U.S. carrier that hasn’t jumped on the checked bag fee bandwagon.
