Uber and aircraft builder Bell Helicopter showed off new technology at the CES 2018 convention in Las Vegas that could bring a flying taxi system to fruition.
The two companies team up to create an aircraft that is part helicopter and part drone, with four seats offering room for luggage and large windows for enjoying the scenery. Bell aims to have the aircraft fly at max speeds of 150 mph. The plane would also feature amenities like WiFi, wireless charging, video calling and artificial intelligence. They’d be piloted by humans but could become autonomous in the future.
Uber hopes to roll out the technology in major cities including Dallas, Dubai and Los Angeles by 2020 with the goal of cutting travel times while charging passengers a similar rate as ground transportation.
In addition to continuing to develop the technology, the companies would have to gain approval from air traffic control and other government entities, a process that could take several years.
