The U.S. government issued a $300,000 fine to Japan Airlines for two delays that left passengers stranded for hours earlier this year.

In response, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the airline reached an agreement to lower the fine by $60,000 — a credit for the airline’s compensation to passengers.

The incident occurred May 15, when a Japan Airlines flight from Tokyo (NRT)–New York (JFK) diverted to Washington, D.C. (IAD). When the plane was on the tarmac refueling, confusion about crew members reaching the end of their shift led to passengers being stuck inside the cabin for five hours. Another incident, Jan. 4, on a Tokyo–NYC flight was forced to land in Chicago (ORD), leaving passengers stranded for four hours.

The U.S. government agreed to waive $120,000 of the fine if the carrier can avoid similar problems throughout the next year. Japan Airlines blamed the delays on “weather-related airport congestion.”
