London’s Tube, the underground railway system, now operates 24 hours a day on Fridays and Saturdays as of last month. The all-day service is available on the city’s Victoria and Central lines. The service will later be extended to the Northern, Jubilee and Piccadilly lines in the fall, with the main goal of better serving those partaking in the city’s nightlife at late hours. Late-night workers such as nurses and security guards will also benefit from the extensions. Trains will run every 10 minutes through Central London, and prices will stand at standard off-peak fares. Cards will remain active until 4:29 a.m., the following day. In case things get rowdy, there will be around 100 British transport police officers on board to ensure passenger safety. London Underground officials estimate there will be around 200,000 people using the service each weekend once it is open on all five lines. The service extensions will benefit the London economy, too, with around 2,200 new jobs coming as a result.
