To encourage travelers to sign up for the TSA PreCheck program, Transportation Security Administration officials started using tablets to enroll passengers in a pilot program in Baltimore (BWI).

TSA agents working at BWI are using tablets that save fingerprints and verify identification. The program allows passengers to apply for the PreCheck program at the airport at any time.

The program attempts to find a way to reduce the need to make an appointment at an enrollment center. TSA officials will see whether passengers are more likely to enroll when they fly domestically, internationally or in other circumstances. TSA will also look at the wait time of a given checkpoint as a factor in enrollment potential. They’re also looking to increase the efficiency of travelers joining the program.

TSA wants to increase the number of airline passengers enrolled in the program, but also to make it more useful for passengers already enrolled, especially frequent travelers. If the pilot is successful, TSA will possibly expand it to other airports.
