February is Black History Month, and restaurants, airlines and destinations are celebrating. Here’s a sampling of some programs, exhibits, Black-owned businesses and more around the country for your travels this month and beyond.
Montgomery, Alabama, known as the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement, offers a number of experiences for travelers. The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration reopened in October with new exhibits on the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, alongside its regular displays on the history of slavery and racism in America. The Rosa Parks Museum at Troy University includes a permanent exhibit, a time machine, a temporary exhibit, archives and more. The National Memorial for Peace & Justice is located outdoors in a six-acre park overlooking the city. Also of note in Montgomery is The Civil Rights Memorial, Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church, Dexter Parsonage Museum, Freedom Rides Museum, Frank M. Johnson Jr. Federal Building and United States Courthouse, Chris’ Hotdogs, and Brenda’s and Barbara Gail’s Neighborhood Grille, both owned and operated by the Bethune family.
Chef Nina Compton and her flagship restaurant, Compère Lapin at Old No. 77 Hotel in New Orleans, celebrate Black History Month with a series of collaborative dinners every Thursday in February. The month-long series will showcase the talents of some of the city’s Black culinarians. If in South Florida, support one of these Black-owned restaurants: C-Food Shack at The Lincoln Eatery, Simply Good Pizza and Rosie’s at Copper Door B&B.
Delta Air Lines will spotlight two new collections with its onboard entertainment to celebrate Black History Month. The collections include must-see documentaries from Black filmmakers, films and interviews. Through these offerings, the airline also highlights its connection with the city of Atlanta. Some of the films included are Do The Right Thing, Fruitvale Station, If Beale Street Could Talk, LA ’92, Hip Hop: The Songs That Shook America and more.
Philadelphia’s The Kimmel Cultural Campus offers a variety of digital Black History Month programs, spotlighting the music of the Civil Rights Movement, today’s struggle for modern equality and more. A special Black History Month playlist celebrates generations of Black artists and musicians.
