Removing your electronics and liquids from your carry-on luggage may not be the only items you need to unpack and separate in the near future, according to the Transportation Security Administration.

Due to airlines slapping on hefty checked baggage fees, more travelers are opting for carry-on, which results in a line of people at security with overstuffed rolling bags and backpacks. After trying to fit everything into a carry-on, it is more difficult for TSA security scanners to see through the clutter and identify dangerous objects and also results in a high number of manual searches, which slows down the line and tends to aggravate passengers.

A new law that would require passengers to separate their food from their carry-on bags is currently being tested at three national airports: Los Angeles International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. Pending the success of the trial, and once TSA agents have undergone proper training, the new initiative may be rolled out at airports nationwide.
