Sydney Airport is testing new biometric technology with Qantas that will allow passengers to check in, drop off bags, board and gain lounge access using automated systems relying on facial recognition.

The trial is described as the most extensive of its kind yet by Sydney Airport CEO Geoff Culbert. He said the move is part of the airport’s plan to “deliver a full ‘couch-to-boarding gate’ facial recognition process.” He says mobile check-in and automated border processing will be considered for future trials of the technology.

“In the future, there will be no more juggling passports and bags at check-in and digging through pockets or smartphones to show your boarding pass — your face will be your passport and your boarding pass at every step of the process,” Culbert added.

“Qantas customers will not only be able to check in for their flight using the technology, it is also available for our lounge staff who can create a more personalized experience when passengers arrive,” said Vanessa Hudson, chief customer officer, Qantas.

The trial is currently tapping Qantas passengers on certain international flights.
