Sweden last month became the first country to have its own dedicated phone number. The Swedish Tourist Association created a hotline to allow people interested in learning about or traveling to Sweden to talk with actual Swedes, who can pass along their local knowledge.

So far, about 530 volunteers signed up from around Sweden via an app created to help operate the hotline. When the number is dialed, a message says, “You will soon be connected to a random Swede somewhere in Sweden.” And so you are.

“We want to show a unique and genuine Sweden – a country worth visiting, with the right to roam, sustainable tourism and a rich cultural heritage,” said Magnus Lind, CEO, Swedish Tourist Association, in a statement. “We also want to create pride and knowledge about Sweden, nationally as well as internationally.”

Anyone outside of Sweden can call the “Swedish Number,” and then be transferred at random to one of the Swedish volunteers. Any topics are open for discussion though the premise, of course, is to get questions answered about travel from real people — rather than promotions from the tourism agency.

“In the digital world we live in the real conversation becomes ever more important. That’s why we’re giving the Swedes the opportunity to, as the first country in the world, get their own phone number (…) which gives all citizens a fair chance to express themselves and offer tips about what to do here,” said Lind.
