The future of airport security screenings is one step closer thanks to the success of biometric scanning technology. Biometric technology has been introduced in only a few airports so far, including Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., where its capabilities have been tested in terms of identifying individuals via scans of their eyes, faces and fingerprints.
Despite being installed for only two days, biometric scanning proved successful in late August when officers of U.S. Customs and Border Protection at Dulles noticed a traveler’s facial features from the scan did not match the image of the passport he was carrying from São Paolo to the United States. CBP officers eventually discovered the man was from the Republic of Congo, and, shortly after, were able to begin an investigation.
Biometric scanning capabilities are also outfitted in airports in Detroit (DTW), Los Angeles (LAX), New York (JFK) and Orlando (MCO), and are useful in multiple stages of travel, from security checks to immigration checkpoints to boarding.
With the power of technology, it has become nearly impossible for travelers to get around using a stolen passport or identity card.
