A recent report from the Wall Street Journal’s Middle Seat column identified America’s top airlines in terms of operational performance and, for the first time, Spirit Airlines made its way to the fourth-place position, unseating heavy hitters American Airlines and United Airlines, ranked at seventh place and fifth place, respectively.
Middle Seat’s annual list analyzes everything from punctuality and baggage handling to the number of complaints within a year. In 2016 and 2017, the budget carrier ranked second to last, but, for 2018, Spirit pulled ahead of major competitors to take fourth place.
In 2018, Spirit experienced very few flight delays and a low number of canceled flights, ranking first in the country in October in terms of on-time departures.
Not only do Spirit’s operations help it rise in the rankings, but the struggle of other major carriers also contributes to the shift in operational success. The ranking does not take into account the in-flight experiences of passengers, pricing structures and the copious add-on fees to make up for the airline’s insanely inexpensive fares.
