Last week, Spirit Airlines revealed in its 10-Q quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that decreased demand for air travel competitive pricing from other airlines could force the airline out of business in the next 12 months.

In the filing, the airline noted it has “continued to be affected by adverse market conditions, including elevated domestic capacity and continued weak demand for domestic leisure travel in the second quarter of 2025, resulting in a challenging pricing environment.” Spirit Airlines also expects to continue facing these challenges and uncertainties for at least the rest of 2025.

By Nov. 1, the airline revealed it will also furlough about 270 pilots as it continues to restructure after emerging from bankruptcy earlier this year. Spirit Airlines is also considering other avenues, such as selling some of its gate capacity and aircraft to other airlines. That said, these efforts may still not be enough to keep the airline in business.

For current travelers booked on any upcoming Spirit Airlines, no action is required. Travelers with long-term travel plans, however, should consider travel insurance if flights are via Spirit Airlines.
