Beginning April 4, low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines will reduce the allowed size of its customers’ free carry-on bag.

The airline announced the allotted space for carry-on luggage, as part of the Bare Fare policy, will be reduced from 2,688 cubic inches to 2,016 cubic inches. For those who do not comply with the one, reduced size bag will be charged $100 to bring the bag on board. If passengers wish to carry larger bags, pre-payment starting at $26 is allowed.

“As far as the personal item size, you’re correct about the planned adjustments noted on our site. We heard from many customers who told us their laptop bags or larger purses weren’t fitting quite as well under our seats length-wise,” said a spokesperson at Spirit Airlines. “We take customer feedback very seriously, so we’ve adjusted the length to accommodate these popular personal items. We’re still proud to offer one of the largest personal item sizes in the industry.”

The change for the airline comes as several major carriers are offering less frills and cheaper fares like American Airlines and United Airlines. The basic economy fare offered by American does not allow for carry-on bags and prohibits passengers from pre-selecting a seat — a similar policy as the one instituted by United.
