Southwest Airlines had big plans for 2019 with the expansion of its Hawai’i service, but the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX planes threw a wrench into these long-awaited plans. However, the airline recently announced, in 2020, it will once again be able to serve the Hawai’ian islands, thanks to a decision to terminate existing long-haul services based at Newark Liberty International Airport, therefore diverting a large portion of its fleet to the new Hawai’i routes.
Southwest was only able to enjoy the fruits of these routes for two months when, in May 2019, Boeing grounded its 787 MAX planes until further notice. The airline was operating six daily trips between Oakland (OAK) and Honolulu (HNL), and San Jose (SJC) and Kahului (OGG), as well as 16 additional daily flights among the Hawai’ian islands.
New routes for 2020 will include Sacramento (SMF)–Honolulu; Oakland to Kona (KOA) and Lihue (LIH); San Jose to Kona and Lihue; and nine additional daily round-trips among Honolulu, Lihue, Kona and Kahului.
Southwest hopes to launch these routes (two of which include new destinations of Lihue and Hilo), Jan. 19–21, 2020.
