Southwest Airlines eyes an international expansion that would introduce new flights to Canada and Europe, said the airline’s CEO Gary Kelly.
Kelly made the announcement at the airline’s annual shareholder meeting, also saying 2017 was the airline’s third-best year ever and its 45th consecutive year of profits.
Kelly said the future is bright for Southwest.
“We believe we have as many as 50 additional opportunities to expand our route map in North America and parts of South America. It may take us 25 years, but it is wonderful, of course, to have those kinds of opportunities to grow.”
Southwest has 100 destinations, but 86 are domestic, making up 96 percent of the airline’s traffic. Just 14 are international, accounting for 4 percent of traffic.
The airline could plan to use Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport as a connection point for flights to Canada and Europe. BWI is Southwest’s second-largest hub.
The international expansion isn’t concrete yet, nor is there a timeline. For 2019, the airline plans to focus on its expansion to Hawai’i.
“Our goal remains to be selling Hawai’i flights by year-end with specific dates, flights and fares coming soon,” Kelly told shareholders. “Flying is subject to FAA approval and certification of extended over-water operations. That work is continuing and on schedule. Our Hawai’i expansion will be a major focus for Southwest in 2019 as far as our fleet growth is concerned.”
