With all the inherent anxiety associated with travel, London’s Heathrow Airport seeks to assuage the stress levels of its visitors by installing an element of peace on the airport walls.
Garden Gate is Heathrow’s solution to the hectic environment that travelers often walk into when entering airports. An all-green wall of more than 1,600 plants and flowers (including the appropriately named Peace Lily) has been installed to help calm passengers. Research has shown exposure to nature, plants and flowers reduces elements of stress such as elevated blood pressure and pulse rates.
Garden Gate has been unveiled in Terminal 3 near Gate 25 where hundreds of thousands of passengers will pass by and breathe in natural tranquility. After a test period of six months, Heathrow officials will evaluate the wall’s efficacy and consider expanding the project to other areas of the airport.
Similar spaces have been installed in other airports with the same mission and have proven successful, such as a garden and plant area at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and a butterfly garden at Singapore’s Changi Airport.
